Theoremus is starting series of articles revealing unexpected or little-known facts about different generations. Today we start with Zets and what are their 10 main reasons to use social media.
According to a representative sample for Bulgaria, the main reason (almost 81%) why Gen Z (people born after ‘95) is on social media is because their friends are there. This means that social proof is very important to them and also that they want to be part of a collective, part of a society.
On the second place, half of Z’s admit that they use social media to fill their spare time. This is most probably because they have plenty of it – still in their college or high school years when their sole care is to have fun and well… to pass the exams.
Next reason by popularity is the sharing of photos and videos with friends. Every second Z uses social media to share, probably looking for Likes and thus social approval as a young teenager, or post-teenage still finding himself.
Not only they seek social approval, they are also interested what their friends are doing (38%). It is hard to be in touch with many friends because there are so many other interesting things going on but with a quick look, you can be up to date with what is going on in their life too. Stalkers are also here.
On the fifth place, comes the funny content Z’s are looking for in social networks.
Next, with the highest distinctiveness (203) is the fear of missing out. This reason is one very distinctive to them compared to the other generations. Therefore we must keep them up to date with news and new product features because this is valuable to them.
The next also distinctive reason of Z’s on social media is networking with other people. Phones are old-school – let us chat on messenger or LinkedIn and get the job done fast and easy.
23% share that this is just another website they visit with no other apparent reason for using it.
Every fifth Z visits social media to follow celebrities or news about celebrities which is very distinctive for that particular generation with distinctive index 236. A deeper research in influencers will give here more light on which celebrities and opinion leaders marketers should focus to gain maximum attention and response.
On the 10th place is the seeking and finding of new products they want to buy. This reason, however, is not highly distinctive for them, but on the contrary.
